(Math Learning Program)

An initiative with Bangladesh Math Olympiad to promote mathematics in Bangladesh

Objective

To develop our beloved country, Bangladesh, we believe that one of the best ways is to invest in our people, specially helping students to think rationally.  Mathematical problem solving is one key element to nourish the faculty of critical thinking. A person with good critical and rational thinking becomes an asset as opposed to a burden for a nation. Hridoya Bangladesh along with Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad (BdMO) would like to raise awareness of the role of mathematics in shaping the future of our students as well as our beloved nation.

Why BdMO?

The objective of Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad (BdMO) is to bring out talents into the spot light, and inspire others to culture mathematics in every corner of our country. From Hridoya Bangladesh, we see the fortune of our nation lies in the hand of our future generations that are equipped with better problem solving skills. Investing our effort in Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad, we think we can positively contribute to our nation by identifying and nourishing the right people through proper training who can eventually help distributing their knowledge to others by truly appreciating the power of mathematics. We believe, our investment in help enriching the minds that understand "How to think" but not "What to think", we will be able to contribute positively to our society and eventually reap the best harvest for our nation.

When to start

There will never be a good time for us to invest for our nation. Yet, we have to invest our time and money to certain extent thinking in a rational way, that will not just grow but will inspire others to grow. Since our objective is not to apply quick fix to our problems, but to help building a foundation for creating better minds, we are committed to run this project for longer period of time and for that matter must start this project at earliest possible time.

Engaging ourselves with BdMO, we have identified following activities that should come under this project.

  1. Enrich training materials and books that would eventually help our students to enrich their problem solving skills.
  2. Organizing frequent math workshops for the teachers
  3. Coordinating different activities among teacher and students
  4. Award to the teachers for each successful students evaluated by BdMO.

Current Status

With our limited resources, we have  initiated this project on July 1st, 2008. To ensure the math skill is acquired in proper manner by our students, we are giving more emphasis on training and coordinating. As part of our initiative, on July 4th 2008, BdMO conducted the first math workshop in Dhaka, with 25 math teachers around the country. Prof Lutfuzzaman sir was one of the instructors giving training on Number theory, Set & Functions and Geometry to the teachers. We are aiming to conduct 3 more workshops before the end of April, 2009.

To further promote math skills to the students, BdMO also helped identifying 10 teachers from Upazilla level schools, who are highly motivated to fulfill the objectives of BdMO. Our objective is to train these teachers and their students by travelling at remote locations of the country. We have engaged Mr. Subrata Deb Nath (ME, BUET ) as a part time coordinator, who will prepare the syllabus, training materials and conduct training at least twice in a year (total 20) to the selected teachers and students.

List of teachers we identified is available here. And syllabus we decided to cover is available here.

Events:

1. Workshop at Dhaka on Aug 22, 2008

10 selected teachers, 1 interested teacher, Munir Hasan, Lutfuzzaman Sir, Subrata and others were present in this orientation workshop. They explained the teachers about the project and discussed some important topics of mathematics through out the workshop. The teachers received 6 bangla & 6 english mathematics books.

2.  Workshop at Dhaka on July 5th, 2008

25 teachers from upazilla level schools attended the workshop. Prof
Lutfuzzaman sir (Dhaka College) was one of the instructor giving training on Number theory, Set & Functions and Geometry to the teachers. From Hridoya Bangaldesh, our math coordinator Subrata Deb Nath from BUET and Munir Hasan from BdMO also conducted the training.

3.  Math tutorials in Noagaon Sept 19th, 2008

In our first initiatve in Gonit Shikkhon Kormoshuchui, our coordinator Subrata (ME, BUET) visited Naogaon to discuss various math problems and problem solving techniques among 16 students of BIAM Laboratory School and Kesobpur School.

4.  Math tutorials in Sylhet Sept 26th, 2008

Conducted math tutorials for the students of "Sikandarpur Abdul Hafiz High School", Balaganj, Sylhet. To familiarize the students about variuos problem solving skills, our instructor Mr. Subrata (ME, BUET) discussed various concepts about numbers, number base, L.C.M & G.C.D. power & factorization and others among 16 selected students by Mr. Ripon Sutradhar of that school.

 5.  Math tutorials in Chittagong Sept 26th, 2008

Conducted math tutorials for the students of "North Pahartoli Chittagong City Corporation Girls High School" and "Rangunia Adarsa Bohumukhi Pilot High School". How can you contribute

It is obvious that, we need financial support to run a project that aims to actively participate in Nation building. To run this project successfully, we need to spend money in following areas. We also need volunteers to translate books into Bangla or easier English.

1. Books for central collection [TK 50,000]
2. Books/Training for 10 teachers [TK 10 x 2,500 = 25,000]
3. Workshops four in one year [TK 4 x 10,000= 40,000]
4. Coordination for 12 months [TK 12 x 4,000= 48,000]
5. Evaluation (Preparation of questions, photocopy, sending etc) [TK 10,000]
6. Communication [TK 10,000]
7. Award to the teachers for each successful student evaluated by BdMO [ Approx TK 75,000]
8. Book translation [Money cannot buy]

We have the list of books from BdMO that need translation, which we are aiming to distribute among ourselves. All our effort will be put into our project website so that we not only cross review them but learn more about them (math). We are quite optimistic that book translation will inspire all most all of us - indeed the most interesting part of this project.

We identify our donors not only by the amount of money they donate, but by the effort they give to shape this project. Donor is identified as one, who can
- Donate time to help spreading our dreams to others.
- Donate time by communicating with the teachers and coordinators to understand their needs and discuss it in this group.
- Donate time by help searching books and training materials.
- Donate books and other training materials.
- Donate your talents by help translating some training materials into Bengali.
- Help collecting corporate donations that will go into fixed deposit account to help generating money to continuously run the project.
- Donate money into Hridoya Bangladesh's fixed deposit account so that it can help generating money to continuously run the project.
- Donate money into Hridoya Bangladesh's regular account for immediate expenses.

How can we be transparent

- Donors should take initiative to communicate with the teachers, coordinators and students to know the status.
- Any contribution that donors make through Hridoya Bangladesh, will be published in the web (even by using alias if needed).
- Any resource (money, book, materials) we invest for BdMO will be published in the web.
- The outcome of our investment, negative or positive will be published in the web.
- For the money donors contributed into the Hridoya Bangladesh's fixed deposit account, are always allowed to be taken out by the donors if not satisfied with the outcome

The money kept in  a fixed deposit fund is to grow over time and use the growth NOT the capital to spend in this project so that we can build a self-sufficient fund instead of asking donors every time we need some fund. If a donor is not satisfied with the progress or activities, the person can take the donation away within a year of donation.
