Goal

The primary objective of this initiative is to raise fund for the financially challenged students to pursue their education at Collectorate Public School and College, Nilphamari. Being a private school the tuition fee is high, that causes several brilliant students droping this school and joining to low cost schools. This drive is to support a number of students, who get scholarship at class five, in continuing their education at the same school. We hope to support their partial monthly tuition fee from class six to class eight.

School Introduction

Bangladesh Civil Service Administrative Association has established a number of Collectorate Public School and Colleges at different districts to elevate the quality of education in Bangladesh. Collectorate Public School & College, Nilphamari (CPSC-N), is one of such institution governed by a number of members from civil administration headed by District Commissioner of Nilphamari. It was established on June 3, 2004 and the classes began on January 1, 2005. It started from class Three to class Eight with 238 of total students. In 2006 it extended to class One to class Nine with 520 students. Now it is extending to college level education with 256 students. So the total number of students right now is around 776.

Nilphamari is one of the backward districts in Bangladesh with few number of good quality education institution. Now the CPSC-N is stepping forward to fill the gap and disseminating knowledge to the students of Nilphamari as well as its surrounding districts. The progress of this school is highly appreciable in terms of result in different public examinations. The following table shows the result of Primary and Junior Scholarships examination in 2005 and 2006.

Year of Exam Level Participants Talent-pull General Total
2005 Primary 19 11 4 15
2006 Primary 30 19 3 22
2005 Junior 10 1 1 2
2006 Junior 20 5 4 9

Problem Addressed

CPSC is a private institution that doesn't take any Govt. subsidy for its operation. It bears all of its operation and development cost from students' tuition and other fees. Being a private institution the monthly tuition fee is high. In primary school it is 300/- and in high school it is 350/-. Also every student has to pay around 1200/- at the beginning of each year as development fee. It burdens a number of guardians. This causes a number of the students leaving the school and join at Govt. schools since the educational expense is less in Govt. schools. Many parents are unable to bear this minimum amount of money to get better education. Last year in 2006, 18 students who got scholarship in primary left the school. According to the Principal, if it is possible to subsidize their tuition fee by half, then it is possible to have those students continuing at CPSC. The parents will spend the rest in spite of their hardships because of better education. Even, in class eight, if those students again get scholarship, we don't have to continue their support, as they will continue for next two years with the hope of good result in S.S.C.

The CPSC is assuming, thirty (30) students will get scholarship every year on average. Based on our fund collection we project to support 12 students, 200/- per month for each of them. The cost will be 2400/- per month. Since the school is established very recently and it has shortage of fund, we like to continue this project for two years. After that we hope CPSC will subsidize poor students from its own fund and thus helping poor students continuing their education for better future. The approximate cost summary is given in the following table.

Cost of the Project per Month

Year Class No. of Students Amount per Head (Tk.) Total Per Month (Tk.) Total(Tk.) Total(USD)
2008 Six 12 200.00 2,400.00 28,800.00 400.00
2009 Six, Seven 24 200.00 4,800.00 57,600.00 800.00

                                                                   Approx. Total US $1,200.00
